Understanding and Identifying Your Hair Type and Texture

Understanding your hair’s natural type and texture can help you style it better. No one person has the same exact hair and, therefore, can uniquely represent themselves. Understanding your hair’s texture and type can allow you to use the right products and style it the right way while keeping your hair healthy and clean!

Hair Textures

There are three primary hair textures are fine, medium, and coarse. Each texture requires different care and pops with a particular style. We provided specific hair treatments and styles for each hair texture!

Fine

This is a fragile texture that can lack volume and hold. Because of this fragility, make sure to choose hairstyles that do not damage your hair while also giving your hair some volume for a fuller appearance.

Medium

Medium hair texture is the most common of the three and can be easily transformed into many different hairstyles, as it isn’t too thick or too thin.

Coarse

Coarse or thick hair requires a longer drying process as your hair will soak up more water. Plus, it might be resistant to certain shampoos and hair care chemicals.

Hair Type

While there are more than three hair types, the following three are the main ones most people fall under.

Straight

Straight hair is naturally shinier and holds more natural oils. However, it can also get oilier, so experiment with shampoos and conditioners to get the right feel for your hair so it isn’t too oily. Also, straight hair tends to have less volume, so hairspray and styles that make your hair look bigger are a must to achieve that volume.

Wavy

Wavy hair tends to get frizzier quicker and easier than other hair types, especially in the heat. Touching your hair often causes wavy hair to frizz as well, so when applying shampoo or drying your hair, use lighter hair products and avoid towel rubbing.

Curly

Curly hair is the toughest to maintain and care for, ass frizz is common among this hair type, and styling can be a pain each morning. Shorter hair is best for curly hair, as it is easier to maintain and allows your curls to shine more. To keep your curls, avoid hairstyles that require heat, which will straighten out your curly hair.
