Laser removing a tattoo on the forearm of a woman

How to Prepare Yourself for a Tattoo Removal

Although tattoos are permanent, your feelings toward them don’t have to be. When you’re young and feel invincible, getting a tattoo might seem like a great way to permanently mark something meaningful, like a hobby, person, quote, or anything else on your body. However, as time passes, you may find that what you’ve tattooed no longer represents who you are, and you may want a fresh start. Don’t worry! We are here to help guide you through preparing for tattoo removal and educate you on the process and challenges involved.

What Does a Tattoo Removal Entail?

Tattoo removal is most commonly done through laser tattoo removal, in which beams of light will focus on the parts of your skin with tattoo ink, breaking the ink down into smaller particles. This allows your immune system to remove the ink particles more easily.

Our Procedure

Each procedure is different based on how detailed the tattoo is, when you got the tattoo, and how much skin it covers. Once we have our first session and determine the best plan based on your type of tattoo, we will start the removal process. The removal process will primarily be done in multiple sessions, usually between 3 to 7 sessions. Since the healing process is delicate, sessions are not done in subsequent days or weeks but given a 2-month break period in between each session at minimum.

What to Expect After

Tattoo removals are a long process rather than a quick fix as they involve many months of healing and sometimes scarring. A tattoo will slowly fade throughout each session rather than completely disappearing after one session. Plus, your skin will not fully heal until at least a full year after your last treatment.

Black-and-white tattoos often disappear better than color tattoos, as the pigment from color tattoos may be too deep and might still exist within the skin even after the removal and healing process.

Take Care of Your Skin

After all your sessions, you will still have over a year of healing in that area, so it’s best to care for your skin correctly. It will most likely be sore for a while and sensitive, so if you ever go out in the sun, apply sunscreen to that area if you are not covering it with a bandage. Using the recommended ointment for your sensitive skin would be best to ease pain and help your skin heal. We will provide options for lotions and creams when you’ve completed your tattoo removal sessions. Try not to pick your skin while it’s healing since that could lead to scarring, which would replace the permanent ink on your body with a permanent scar, which nobody wants.
